Meet Laura Beattie, Founder

My journey to starting Laura the Pet Nanny began long before the company was founded. After many years working in international shipping in the U.S., U.K., and New Zealand, I returned to the U.S. to pursue a master’s degree in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. I enjoyed treating patients, but an unexpected turn in the economy following the Great Recession led me to reconsider an idea I’d carried with me since the 1990s.

As a cat owner, I had wonderful experiences with professional pet sitters and knew firsthand how reassuring it was to have someone trustworthy caring for my pets while I was away. I had often thought about starting a pet sitting company of my own, and in 2010, I finally took the leap while continuing to practice acupuncture.

Within just six months, the business had grown beyond what I could manage on my own. It was clear that local pet owners needed dependable, high-quality in-home pet care, and I wanted to provide a service I could truly stand behind. What began as an idea inspired by my own experiences quickly became my passion and full-time career.

Although I continue to maintain my acupuncture license, I chose to devote myself to Laura the Pet Nanny. For me, it’s about more than caring for pets, it’s about giving pet parents peace of mind, knowing their beloved companions are safe, happy, and cared for with the same love and attention I would want for my own.

Laura Beattie, owner of Laura the Pet Nanny.

Our Philosophy

“To provide our clients with peace of mind, knowing their beloved pets are safe, happy and cared for with the same love and attention we would want for our own pets.” — Laura Beattie

That belief shows up in how we run the business day to day:

  • Pets stay home. Your pet keeps its own routine, food, and bed.
  • Every visit is documented. Each visit includes a photo update and notes so you know exactly how your pet is doing. [We use pet sitting software and send a journal update with pictures during each visit.]
  • Nothing is left to chance. Clients meet a team of sitters, so if a sitter is ever not available, the client and pets have already met a team of sitters who can step in to help. This also means it is exceptionally rare that we are unable to accommodate bookings.
  • Another benefit of having a large team of sitters, is that sitters schedules don’t get overbooked and we have the ability to really match the skills of a sitter to the pets they care for.

About Our Pet Sitters

With over 30 sitters across Seminole County, the standard Laura sets is what you can count on, whoever comes to your door. Every sitter is:

  • Criminal background checked
  • Pet CPR and First Aid certified
  • Covered by the company’s insurance and bonding through Business Insurers of the Carolinas as well as sitters individual insurance.

We look for potential sitters who have previous pet care experience, preferably outside of pet ownership, such as experience working in rescue, veterinary clinics, dog kennels/daycare, etc.  They must be able to read dog/cat body language, are able to identify signs/symptoms of illness and are skilled in providing medication to cats as well as dogs.

Questions About Laura the Pet Nanny

Who owns Laura the Pet Nanny?

Laura the Pet Nanny, Inc. was founded in 2010 by Laura Beattie, who still runs the company. She is a member of Pet Sitters International.

Will Laura be my pet sitter?

Laura leads the team and sets the standards; she isn’t currently taking on new clients. Your visits will generally be handled by one of our skilled sitters who live locally to the client. Laura will step in as a back up sitter as needed and assists in emergency situations.

How are your pet sitters screened?

Every sitter goes through several levels of assessment prior to making it to the interview process. If they are considered a good fit for the job, they will do a ride along on visits to further see how they interact with pets prior to bringing them onboard. They must also pass a criminal background check.
